I
have a confession to make, I have been given credit for something that I did
not do: I have never healed anyone. There. I said it!
There are a lot of people who have been healed in my clinic, but I was not
the one who did it. I am sure you’re asking yourself, “who is this
great healer that works with Dr. Bingham that we have never see?” This
great healer is you.
Our bodies are born with the innate, or inborn ability to heal.
When you cut yourself the band-aid doesn’t heal the cut, your body does.
The band-aid removes interference from the outside world so the body can do
its job. This is exactly what chiropractic does.
Chiropractic was founded on the belief that the body can heal itself as long
as it is free from interference in the nervous system. The nervous system is
one of the most important systems in the body. The nervous system affects every
action in the body, including those that we are not aware of. If there is an
injury to the spinal cord the results can be disastrous, most often the victim
loses the function of the area of the body that is controlled by the injured
area.
Because the nervous system is so important, the body goes to extensive lengths
to make sure it is protected. This is the job of the spine. The spine needs
to protect the spinal cord from injury and it also much allow for free movement.
It would be much easier to create one large bone that surrounded the spinal
cord, unfortunately we would need someone else to tie our shoes.
This is why the spine is comprised of twenty-four independently moving small
bones that house the spinal cord known as vertebrae. These vertebrae stack
on top of each other to create a free moving, yet protective covering for the
spinal cord. Anyone who has worked with mechanics know the more parts your
have, the more likely you are to have problems.
The spine serves it’s purpose well, but has it’s flaws. Very much
in the same way that the computer you are using can go along working fine for
day and one day just ‘locks up.’ When a vertebrae ‘locks
up’ it affects the functioning of the areas controlled by the spinal
cord at that level. When a vertebrae locks up there is one way to unlock it.
That is through a spinal manipulation. The manipulation or adjustment frees
the area of the spine that is functioning incorrectly. This provides life and
nervous flow back to the problem area.
Without the nervous system our bodies wouldn’t function. With a compromised
nervous system our bodies don’t function as well. As a chiropractor,
it is my job to make sure your nervous system is working properly. As a patient
it is your job to let the body heal itself.
